Why use films in the classroom?

The current generation of students has been bombarded my media on film throughout their childhood. (Paris, 1997)  Educational films have been deeply embedded in the lives of these students starting years before school with shows such as Sesame Street and Barney and Friends. Media is a large part of lives today, so why not use that to our advantage in the classroom?
